Paul Edwards (husband of late-author with Waterside Press Audrey Edwards) has told us that his local Book Circle, Parish Nativity of the Lord in Redhill, Surrey, recently discussed her work No Truth No Justice (Waterside Press, 2002). The book describes how their son Christopher, aged thirty, fragile and suffering from mental ill-health was killed in his prison cell by a paranoid schizophrenic cellmate. How after years of campaigning, the European Court of Human Rights held that the UK Government had denied Christopher his right to life and that Audrey and Paul had been denied a proper investigation.
The Book Circle drew the following main conclusions: ‘This was a book everyone across the UK should read to understand how the “systems” behind many decisions work – often protecting the wrong people. …. Anyone concerned in the issues of justice or politics might find [it] an important “reality’ check” …. [It] highlights the ever-increasing need for services and support for those with mental health issues.’
They ‘felt the dignity from this quiet, unassuming couple who had never given up on getting to the truth for their son.’
The book was ‘very powerful – raising feelings ranging from shock, sadness, and frustration through to hope and strength.’
