This constructive and forward-looking book resulted from the author working in, studying and thinking about prisons. It counteracts images of prisons as negative places and challenges people to identify and encourage ‘goodwill’, energies and skills which might be maximised so as to make prisons safe and purposful communities. Since it was published in 1997 there have been considerable enhancements in prison regimes and to some extent working cultures along the lines described in the book- even if there is still a way to go.
