A sample entry
British Crime Survey (BCS) An important source of information about levels of crime and public attitudes to crime. BCS results play a part in informing criminal policy. The annual survey measures crime in England and Wales (originally Scotland also, but it and Northern Ireland now have their own such surveys) by asking members of the general public about crimes they have experienced in the previous year. The BCS includes crimes which are not reported to the police, and is a key alternative to police records. It collates information about: the victims of crime; the circumstances in which incidents occur; and aspects of offending behaviourso as to inform crime reduction measures and to gauge their effectiveness. It is also an important source concerning perceptions of crime, anti-social behaviour and public attitudes towards the CJS, including the police and the courts. In particular, it looks at common and other attitudes to crime, e.g. at fear of crime and views about the measures needed to avoid it.
